Marriage License Information
In
Reno, Nevada, a male and female person, at least 18 years of age,
not nearer of kin than second cousins or cousins of the half blood,
and not having a husband or wife living, may be joined in marriage.
Proof of age is required. No medical certificates are required for
a marriage license. Both parties must appear in person at the Marriage
License Bureau, Washoe County Courthouse, 75 Court Street, Reno, Nevada.
Signature of both parties is required on the marriage license affidavit.
You may be married immediately after the marriage license is issued.
Blood
Tests/Waiting Periods
Blood tests are not required, and there is no waiting period.
Divorce
Requirements
In order to obtain a Marriage License and have a legal marriage, divorces
must be final in the state where granted. The date of the final decree
and the city and state where granted are required.
Facts
on Legal Age Requirements
A person at least 16 years of age but less than 18 years of age may
marry only if he or she has the consent of:
1. Either parent; or
2. Such person's legal guardian (Nevada Revised Stature 122.020).
Persons signing as guardians must furnish a certified court order
showing proof of legal guardianship to the satisfaction of the Clerk.
If
the parent cannot be present, a written statement in English, stating
the birth date and age of the minor child and stating the relationship
of the person giving consent, acknowledged before a notary public
or other officer authorized to take acknowledgements must be presented.
The notary must state the parent personally appeared before them.
Under
the provisions of Nevada Revised Stature 122.015, a person less than
16 years of age may marry if either parent or legal guardian files
an action, pays all court fees as provided by law, and presents a
court order from the Second Judicial District Court, Washoe County,
Nevada, authorizing the Clerk to issue a license.
Hours
and Fees
Office hours are Monday through Sunday 8:00 a.m. to Midnight, including
holidays. The fee for issuance of a marriage license is $55.00 at
the Reno Courthouse, 75 Court Street, Room 131. Cash Only!
Marriage
Ceremonies
To be legally married a marriage ceremony must be performed by any
person authorized to perform marriages in the State of Nevada. The
options are wedding chapels, churches, or the Commissioner of Civil
Marriages. Law requires one witness to the marriage ceremony.
Civil
Marriages
The Commissioner of Civil Marriages performs Civil Marriages in Reno
and Sparks townships at 350 S. Center St., Suite 100, Reno (the Justices of
the Peace in such townships are precluded by law from performing marriages).
The fee charged for marriages performed by the Commissioner of Civil
Marriages is $50.00 (cash, money order, or bank certified check).
Office hours are Monday and Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed
for lunch hour from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday
and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., closed for lunch hour from 2:00
p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Closed all holidays except Valentines.
Certified
Copies
After you have been married, you receive the original marriage certificate.
For a certified copy of the marriage application, send $10.00 (money
order or bank certified check) to the Washoe County Clerk, PO Box
30083, Reno, NV 89520-3083. To receive a certified copy of your marriage
record (proof of marriage) send $10.00 (money order or bank certified
check) and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Washoe County
Recorder, PO Box 11130, Reno, NV 89520-0027. Be sure to include the
date of marriage, marriage license number (if known), and the names
of bride and groom at time of marriage with your request.
